Effective Leadership
A CD-ROM based multimedia training package.

A personal review by Rod Ward - 16/04/97

This review appeared in the CTI Nursing & Midwifery Newsletter Vol 2, No 3. June 1997

Installation of this package was easy under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. To run it from the CD (slower) needs 4MB of hard disc space, to run it totally from the hard disc 20 Mb.

A sound card is required.

The program is based on the Work of John Adair (who introduces the program and provides a commentary) and his 3 circles model; task needs, team maintenance and individual needs. It encourages users to examine the; qualities, situational and functional approaches to leadership and relate these to themselves and their work. There is good use of text, diagrams, sound and video clips (from 2 high profile leaders; Tracey Edwards & Sally Chivers) to illustrate the theoretical concepts.

This is a UK produced and targeted program with clear links to NVG & IIP preparation & training.

A tutorial is provided, which briefly (but adequately) guides users through the use and structure of the material.

Navigation buttons enable the user to select their path through the material globally and within sections. Mouse & Keyboard options are provided for navigation. Check lists are provided to be completed by the user, to relate the material to themselves (these are also in the support materials).

Generally it is a well produced & presented package, which can be applied to a wide range of settings. Some help may be needed for student nurses to transfer their learning into health care settings.
